Instacart Shopper Tax Deductions — The Complete 2026 Guide

Instacart classifies all its shoppers as independent contractors — which means you file as self-employed and have access to deductions that significantly reduce what you owe. This guide covers every legitimate deduction available to both full-service shoppers and in-store shoppers in 2026.

As an Amazon Associate, Deducr earns from qualifying purchases. This does not affect the price you pay.

Full-Service Shoppers vs. In-Store Shoppers

Instacart has two types of shoppers, and your deductions differ depending on which role you fill.

Full-service shoppers use their own vehicle to shop at the store and deliver to the customer. This means you can deduct mileage — the largest single deduction available. Your drive to the store, through the store parking lot, and to the customer's address all count.

In-store shoppers are Instacart W-2 employees, not independent contractors. If this is your role, most of this guide does not apply to you — you will receive a W-2 and your tax situation is much simpler.

Mileage — Schedule C Line 9

For full-service shoppers, vehicle expenses are almost always the largest deduction. In 2026, the IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile. You can deduct every mile driven while actively working — from your first store arrival through your last delivery drop-off.

What you cannot deduct: the drive from your home to the first store of the day (that is commuting), and the drive home after your last delivery (also commuting). Everything in between is fair game.

At 72.5 cents per mile, a full-service shopper driving 12,000 work miles per year generates a $8,700 deduction — saving roughly $2,500–$3,400 in actual taxes depending on their bracket, after SE tax savings are factored in. Use a mileage tracking app like Stride, Everlance, or MileIQ — Instacart does not automatically log all your miles.

Insulated Bags and Cold Storage — Schedule C Line 22

This is the most Instacart-specific deduction on the list. Keeping groceries at the correct temperature is a fundamental job requirement — Instacart will deactivate shoppers who consistently deliver spoiled or warm items. Insulated bags and ice packs are therefore ordinary and necessary business expenses.

  • Insulated grocery totes and cooler bags — essential for all orders involving refrigerated or frozen items. A good set of insulated bags runs $20–$60 on Amazon. Browse insulated grocery bags on Amazon.
  • Reusable ice packs — for alcohol deliveries and perishable orders, especially in warm months. $10–$25 for a set.
  • Hard-sided coolers — for shoppers doing high-volume orders or multi-order batches, a small cooler keeps everything organized and cold. Fully deductible if used for work.

Phone and Navigation Gear — Schedule C Line 22

Your phone is your primary work tool as an Instacart shopper — you navigate with it, communicate with customers through it, and manage every order on it. Phone-related work expenses are deductible:

  • Phone mount for your car — if you drive, you need hands-free navigation. Dashboard or windshield mounts cost $15–$30. Browse car phone mounts on Amazon.
  • Car phone charger — essential for long shopping shifts. $10–$25.
  • Portable power bank — backup charging for on-foot store navigation. Look for at least 10,000mAh. $20–$50. Browse power banks on Amazon.
  • Cell phone bill (business portion) — the percentage of your monthly phone bill that corresponds to work use is deductible on Line 25. Goes on Schedule C Line 25 (Utilities).

Reusable Shopping Bags — Schedule C Line 22

Many Instacart shoppers use their own reusable bags to organize orders in the store and transport groceries cleanly. These are a deductible business supply. Keep a receipt. A set of durable reusable shopping bags costs $15–$30 on Amazon and is a genuinely ordinary expense for this type of work. Browse reusable bags on Amazon.

Car Supplies — Schedule C Line 22

For full-service shoppers who transport groceries in their car:

  • Cargo organizers and trunk dividers — keeps bags upright during delivery. $15–$35.
  • Seat-back hooks — hang multiple bags from your headrests. $10–$20.
  • Car cleaning supplies — spills happen. Microfiber cloths and interior cleaner are a legitimate supply. $15–$30.

What Instacart Shoppers Cannot Deduct

  • Tips you receive — these are taxable income, not a deduction
  • Grocery items you purchase for personal use
  • Clothing that could be worn outside of work (a regular jacket, everyday shoes)
  • The drive from home to your first store of the day
